Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakosongola district, along Kampala Gulu Highway and houses Uganda’s rhino reintroduction project. There are currently no black Rhinos, although plans are underway. The Rhino Sanctuary is very popular for Rhino Trekking and Birding safaris in Uganda.
Rhinos in Uganda became extinct in 1982 as they were present in the north and north-west of the country and all were poached during the years of civil unrest, in 1997 rhino fund Uganda was established with the sole aim to reintroduce the rhino into Uganda, in 2005 the first rhinos were brought in Ziwa rhino sanctuary a private ranch donated by a well-wisher as a temporal home and breeding area for the white rhino under the rhino fund international. The breeding program is under way, with growth in number these will be introduced back in their former home range. So when on yourself drive holiday to this rhino sanctuary, we expect you to get your hired 4×4 vehicle from self-drive Uganda the previous day that you will be using the following day. On the actual day of the trip, wake up very early in the morning and have your breakfast. Then before 7:00 am hit the road to the Northern part of the country so that you are not stark in the morning traffic jam of Kampala, the sanctuary is about 2 hours and half drive from Kampala and then on to Nakasongola Savannah, to the rhino sanctuary do the tracking, usual time spent with the rhino is one hour with a guide to accompany you to explain the animal behaviour.
The Sanctuary has over 250 species of birds and well-trained birding guides as well to suit the avid birder in search for those rare bird species. Tracking at the Sanctuary is done on foot and closed shoes are a must. This takes approximately one and a half hours.
After trekking, have lunch at the sanctuary and then head back to Kampala, arriving late evening at your hotel of residence and this will prove a day well spent.
